Internships

Project Intern: Youth, Healthy Corner Store Initiative

The Food Trust’s Healthy School Snack Zone Initiative seeks to reduce the incidence of diet-related disease and obesity by improving the snack food choices made by youth in corner stores. The Initiative uses social marketing and education to increase demand for healthy snacks and works with corner store owners and the food industry to increase the availability of healthier choices in stores. Keys components of this initiative include nutrition education lessons in schools and in afterschool programs and empowering youth to become health advocates in their communities.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work with the project educator to coordinate and teach classroom lessons and promote the Snackin’ Fresh social marketing campaign in the 5 pilot school communities.
  • Assist the project educator in working with youth to empower them to change the foods in their corner stores through an interactive website, youth leadership summit and monthly leadership meetings
  • Work with project educator on youth leadership component projects such as youth gardening and entrepreneurship.
  • Prepare, collect, and analyze school data.
  • Support project staff and assist with other project tasks as the need arises.

Qualifications:

The ability to work with others in a collegial environment to implement the agency’s vision. An applicant pursuing an advanced degree is desirable but not required. Position involves frequent travel throughout the Philadelphia region and requires a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle. Team building skills and the ability to encourage innovative thinking about problems, opportunities, and situations. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Spanish language skills desirable. Adept at forging strong relationships with key people inside and outside the agency.

Project Intern: After-School, Healthy Corner Store Initiative

The Food Trust’s Healthy Corner Store Initiative seeks to reduce the incidence of diet-related disease and obesity by improving the snack food choices made by youth in corner stores. The Initiative uses social marketing and education to increase demand for healthy snacks and works with corner store owners and the food industry to increase the availability of healthier choices in stores. Keys components of this initiative include nutrition education lessons in schools and in afterschool programs and empowering youth to become health advocates in their communities.

Responsibilities include :

  • Assist with surveying youth to understand how they feel about school breakfast and afterschool snacks and what improvements should be made to support healthy eating.
  • Assist with surveying staff from schools and afterschool program to identify institutional barriers to increasing breakfast and snack participation.
  • Assist in increasing snack and breakfast participation by: informational letters to parents, special events, in-school promotions, lessons taught in afterschool and school.
  • Assist with developing a guide with maps to distribute to parents in schools/afterschools on healthy eating physical activity opportunities.
  • Assist with monthly lessons, missions, activities that challenge them to change behaviors.
  • Assist with analyzing menus in afterschool programs to measure changes in snacks served.

Project Intern: Corner Store/Small Business, Healthy Corner Store Initiative

The Food Trust’s Healthy Corner Store Initiative seeks to reduce the incidence of diet-related disease and obesity by improving the snack food choices made by youth in corner stores. The Initiative uses social marketing and education to increase demand for healthy snacks while working with corner store owners and the food industry to increase the availability of healthier choices in stores. The initiative links corner store owners, community partners and local farmers to create and sustain healthy corner stores.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with project coordinator, corner store owners and community partners to bring healthy foods to corner stores
  • Plan and implement sustainable strategies for bringing fresh produce and healthy snacks into corner stores
  • Work with community partners to cultivate local entrepreneurship, coordinate business management trainings, and create and deliver cost effective initiatives for store owners to adopt.
  • Build relationships with corner store owners and communicate with owners to discuss project, ideas, and concerns.
  • Assist project coordinator to carry out network meetings, store promotions, and other community events.
  • Design and maintain records for all expenses and revenues related to the sale of healthy products.
  • Collect, enter and analyze corner store data.
  • Support project staff and assist with other corner store work as the need arises.


Qualifications:

Knowledge of fresh food retail and small business development preferred. Spanish language skills strongly desirable. An applicant pursuing an advanced degree is desirable but not required. Position involves frequent travel throughout the Philadelphia region and requires a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle. The ability to work with others in a collegial environment to implement the agency’s vision. Team building skills and the ability to encourage innovative thinking about problems,
