Growth and Evolution in the past year
As the need for pro-active measures towards the reduction of diet-related illness has grown as a public health issue, so has the demand and need for The Food Trust's services. The Food Trust continues to reach new heights of success in promoting healthy eating and food availability in urban communities and advocating for policy to promote long-term change. Specifically, over the last year, The Food Trust:
- Expanded its farmers' market program. The program now includes 25 farmers' markets. The Food Trust has worked with community groups in East Lancaster, West Reading, and Catasauqua to establish markets in part of southeastern Pennsylvania not previously served.
- Expanded its school programs to over 100 public schools in southeast Pennsylvania, with over 50,000 students participating.
- Carried out a thorough evaluation of the Kindergarten Initiative, a multi-faceted nutrition program that connects children and parents to locally grown food and promotes healthy choices.
- Has been recognized by the Kennedy School of Government as a partner in one of the 50 most innovative government programs in the nation, The Fresh Food Financing Initiative.
- Successfully advocated for the farmers' market development bill in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The bill opens the door for the Commonwealth to provide small grants for groups to develop farrmers' markets across the state.
