Mid Atlantic Food & Farm Coalition
The Mid-Atlantic Food and Farm Coalition is a network of people, businesses, organizations and government agencies in the region, whose mission is to build partnerships within the region and its communities to educate people, sustain farming, improve community food security and make affordable, safe, nutritious food available to everyone.
The Coalition's goal is to create a regional compact and leverage funding to support a handful of key initiatives that will improve the region's food system.
The Mid-Atlantic Food and Farm Coalition works to:
- Promote local agricultural products and locally grown food
- Increase the number of retail outlets with fresh, nutritious foods in poor neighborhoods including increasing the number of farmers' markets and inner-city food stores
- Improve resources and support for minority and black farmers and food access in low-income minority communities
- Improve resources available for all farmers, including limited resource farmers.
- Educate local, state, regional and federal policy makers about the need for policy change and secure resources to address food and farm issues in our region
- Support farmland preservation to protect local food production
- Support the development of farmer cooperatives
- Support urban food gardening
The Mid-Atlantic Food and Farm Coalition will disseminate information on successful projects; help to create collaborative projects; develop specific strategies for improving the food and farming system in the region; find real ways to connect producers and consumers including farmers' markets, supermarkets, cooperatives, local trade organizations, etc.; and obtain resources to help the coalition accomplish its goal and mission.
