Look for local in your supermarket

Pennsylvania farmers grow some of the best fruits and vegetables in the country. Buying locally grown food means that the food you eat is fresher and bursting with flavors. It also means that your food dollars are supporting farmers in the State. It’s easy to find supermarkets that carry Pennsylvania produce. Just look for the PA Preferred logo. The PA preferred logo tells you that the food you’re eating was grown or produced in Pennsylvania.

Farmers’ Markets

Buy direct from the farmer at one of the many farmers’ markets in the region. The Food Trust’s farmers’ markets (pdf) offer a great way to buy fresh, local produce while supporting area farmers. Most markets are open from June-November.

Show your support for farmers’ markets by attending The Food Trust’s first annual Farmers’ Rock concert. Happy Accident, This Radiant Boy and others are going to rock out in support of farmers on Friday, July 7 th at 9:00 PM at Mill Creek Tavern, 42 nd St. & Chester Avenue.

Statewide Support for Local Agriculture

The Farmers' Market Alliance was a strong advocate for the "Farmers' Market Development Act," which Governor Rendell recently signed. The "Farmers' Market Development Act" authorizes the Department of Agriculture to establish a program to give grants in order to develop or expand farmers' markets. The bill, which was sponsored by Representative Arthur D. Hershey (R-Chester) allows the state to award grants up to $10,000 to farmers, nonprofit organizations, businesses that operate or manage farmers’ markets and local government units for development and planning costs associated with opening a farmers’ market.

On November 29, 2006 Governor Rendell signed into law the Healthy Farms and Healthy Schools bill (HB 1209). The bill creates a statewide program modeled after the Kindergarten Initiative. The sponsors of the bill recognized that a program that combines integrated nutrition education, parent involvement, and a connection to local agriculture will have a beneficial impact on students, farmers in Pennsylvania.
